The Diablo Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Matilda Hofman, presents Gustav Holst’s seven movement orchestral suite “The Planets” on Sunday February 24 at 2 pm at the Lesher Center for the Arts. Also featured is Tchaikovsky’s powerful Piano Concert No. 1 in Bb Minor, famed for its pounding opening piano chords. The local choral group WomenSing opens the concert with a surprise a capella work before joining the orchestra to perform the mystical and wordless chorus in “Neptune”, the final movement of Holst’s iconic work.  Known for its vibrant and beautifully blended sound, WomenSing is conducted by Ofer dal Lal.

The concert also features solo pianist Christopher Richardson, winner of the Diablo Symphony’s 2018-2019 Yen Liang Young Artist Competition. Richardson, a piano student of Mack McCray, joins forces with the orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s powerful and enduring Piano Concerto No. 1, the work with which he won the Yen Liang competition this past January 6 at the Steinway Gallery in Walnut Creek.  A resident of Danville, he is pursuing a triple major in music, economics and biology at UC Berkeley and also writes a blog for the Steinway Society of the Bay Area. Richardson has been a top prizewinner in numerous national and international piano competitions, including first prize winner in the Senior Concerto division at the 2015-16 Music Teachers National Association Competition. A National Chopin Foundation scholarship recipient and YoungArts Winner, he has appeared on NPR’s "From the Top” and performed in Carnegie Hall.
