Free Computer Baseline Concussion Screening
Summers are a busy time for young athletes participating in a variety of sports camps or pre-season conditioning practices. With the rising incidence of youth sports-related concussions over the past decade, it is vital to identify the early signs and symptoms of concussions so a treatment plan can be determined. Improper management of concussions can lead to premature clearance for return to activity participation. In the months of July and August, The Center for Sports Medicine in Walnut Creek is offering FREE baseline concussion screens for individuals ages 12 and up.

What is ImPACT?
ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is a neurocognitive assessment administered online in a controlled environment. ImPACT has two components: baseline testing and post-injury testing which are used in conjunction to determine if a patient can safely return to an activity. ImPACT is FDA approved for the evaluation of individuals ages 12-59 years old.

What is baseline testing?
Baseline testing is ideally performed before an individual participates in activity. Baseline testing is comprised of computerized assessments that measure reaction time, memory capacity, speed of mental processing, and executive functioning of the brain. Having an estimate of the individual’s functioning prior to an injury helps the healthcare provider more accurately determine the extent of the injury and an appropriate treatment plan.

What is post-injury testing?
Post-injury testing, like baseline testing, is comprised of computerized assessments that measure reaction time, memory capacity, speed of mental processing, and executive functioning scores for memory, reaction, and speed. It is administered after an injury occurs. Results can be compared to baseline scores or to age-referenced normative data by a trained healthcare provider who is authorized to make return to activity decisions.

How long is the testing?
ImPACT testing is a 30-45 minute online test. Please arrive 15 minutes early for registration.
