In his landmark 2015 book Part of Our Lives, Wayne Wiegand, PhD, describes the importance and love of the public library through the eyes of its patrons, and argues that public libraries are much more than public places where people borrow reading materials. His book posits a philosophy about public libraries and their responsibilities to fight censorship and defend intellectual freedom, and demonstrates that since the late 19th century, American public libraries have opened their doors to newcomers, accepted diversity, and created community.
